Police said Acting Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama and the Jakarta Transportation Office had approved the regulation that will be brought into force on December 2014.
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Jakarta Administration will regulate motorcycle usage on protocol streets in Jakarta to avoid frequent accidents involving motorcyclists.

"The number of accidents, particularly in Jakarta, has been very high. Around 67 to 70 percent of the cases involve motorcyclists," Deputy Director for Traffic, Jakarta Police, Senior Commissioner Adjunct Bakharuddin Muhammad Syah said here on Tuesday.

According to Bakharuddin, the government, as a preventive measure against accidents, must impose regulations to monitor motorcyclists.

Police said Acting Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama and the Jakarta Transportation Office had approved the regulation that will be brought into force on December 2014.

"We will collaborate with other institutions to implement the regulation, such as the acting governor who is willing to prepare a free mass transportation plan," Bakharuddin noted.

Restriction on motorcycles will be imposed from Hotel Indonesia Square-MH Thamrin-West Medan Merdeka of Central Jakarta.

The Jakarta Traffic Police will make a preliminary announcement to inform the local people about the regulation.

"We will conduct preliminary counseling and announcement. The administration will implement the regulation and monitor its enforcement. We will impose sanctions on the people who violate the regulation," Bakharuddin added.(*)
