Beijing (ANTARA News) - After four years of negotiations, China has finally reopened its market for swallows nests from Indonesia, noted the Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection, and Quarantine of the Peoples Republic of China.

With this, Indonesia has started exporting its birds nests to China from November 20, according to a written statement received by ANTARA on Friday.

The nests can be exported only by three companies PT Surya Aviesta, PT Adipurna Mranata Jaya, and PT ESTA Indonesia, as they are the only ones listed and approved by the Certification and Accreditation Administration of the Peoples Republic of China.

Earlier, the nests were exported directly without going through Malaysia, as Indonesia and China had signed a birds nest export agreement. However, the exports had to be discontinued due to hygiene problems.

Indonesia is the largest producer of swallows nest and China its largest consumer.

Indonesia exports some 200 tons of swallows nests per year. Swallows nests cost some Rp37 million per kilogram in China.

Indonesias birds nests export needs to meet the requirements of the Swallows Nest Protocol that was signed by both countries in 2012.

Moreover, institutions and regulatory authorities in Indonesia have to ensure that the export of birds nests to China meets all the requirements stipulated in the protocol in order to optimize its export.(*)
