Jakarta, Jan 25 (Antara) - The questioning of Police chief candidate Commissioner General Budi Gunawan by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and of KPK commissioner Bambang Widjojanto by the police should be conducted in a closed-door meeting, an observer said.

Professor of politics of the University of Indonesia (UI) Arbi Sanit said here on Sunday the questioning of Budi Gunawan and Bambang should be conducted in a closed-door investigation to help maintain the images of the two institutions.

"I think, a closed-door investigation is more wiser to maintain the images of the two law enforcer institutions," he said after a discussion on politics.

He said that there had been many questions from the people but no explanations based on facts had been provided, prompting the emergence of many opinions.

"If it is difficult to carry out a transparent legal process, the process should go ahead but be carried out within the two institutions," he said.

He said it was important to maintain the images of the two institutions because the KPK and the Police are legal enforcers in their respective fields in Indonesia.

The public trust on the institutions like the KPK and the Police must be preserved.

"Abroad, conflict among legal enforcers also often happens but the two institutions mutually maintain their images by conducting a closed-door investigation," Sanit said.

Sanit said that matter could be done by starting to send official letters to each other.

"The cases of BW and BG must continue to be processed based on the law but it should be done wisely by the two sides without showing the impression of retaliatory actions in front of the public," Arbi Sanit added.

The KPK has named Commissioner General Budi Gunawan as a graft suspect in connection with certain rewards he allegedly received through suspicious transactions.

It named Gunawan as a suspect just a few days after President Joko Widodo nominated him as the sole candidate for the post of the national police chief.

In the meantime, the Crime Investigation Department (Bareskrim) of the National Police Headquarters has also arrested KPK Deputy Chairman Bambang Widjojanto on Friday (January 23).

Widjojanto was arrested for allegedly prompting witnesses to give false testimony at a session of the Constitutional Court related to a dispute over the election of the head of Kotawaringin district, Central Kalimantan, in July 2010.

According to Head of the National Polices Public Relations Division Inspector General Ronny F. Sompie, the arrest of the anti-graft agency commissioner did not require the involvement of any force.

"The arrest was done humanely. He (Widjojanto) did not resist arrest. No inhuman action was taken. He is, after all, a state official," he remarked.

A case against Widjojanto was made based on a report (number: LP/67/I/2015/Bareskrim, dated January 15, 2015) by Sugianto Sabran, who is a member of Commission III and part of the Indonesia Democratic Party of Struggle faction of the parliament.
