It is important to find values and spirit."Garut (ANTARA News) - Some teenagers from Garut, West Java, who are members of the Outdoor and Adventure Service (OASE) will fly a giant red and white flag atop the Tumpang Stone Cliffs in Garut, West Java, on August 17.
This act is part of celebrations for the 70th anniversary of Indonesian independence.
"As young people, the OASE community will fly a giant red and white flag to evoke a spirit of nationalism," the chief of the team that will raise the flag, Dicky Lukmana, said here.
According to Lukmana, the flag will be 70 x 45 meters in size, larger than the flag flown at the National Monument in Jakarta, which measures 58 x 38 meters.
He hopes that the flapping of the flag on the Tumpang Stone Cliffs in Garut will find a place in the Indonesian Museum of Records (MURI) for the largest flag flown in Indonesia to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Indonesian independence.
"We hope this breaks a MURI record," he remarked.
Lukmana further noted that the commemoration of the 70th Indonesian Independence Day can serve to build a better Indonesia.
The Independence Day should evoke a spirit of nationalism and boost self-confidence in the society.
"It is important to find values and spirit," he stated.
In addition, the flag-raising ceremony can increase public awareness of efforts made to preserve aspects of science, sports, environment, culture, and tourism potential, to advance and civilize the society.
It is expected to enhance nationalism, improve creativity among the youth, and help the society, as well.
"Moreover, it can uphold unity in the younger generation to cultivate a feeling of brotherhood and to empower people," he noted.
