"In this globalized world, the issue of nationalism is no longer dependent on a sheet of paper. It is not necessary that the people with Indonesian identity cards and Indonesian passports harbor a deeper sense of nationalism compared to those who do not have them," Kalla noted at a function to open the third congress of the Indonesian Diaspora here on Wednesday.
The vice president pointed out that Indonesians residing abroad undoubtedly have the experience, capital, and a better network that cannot be ignored.
Kalla further suggested that we can jointly advance the nation by providing the required technology, capital, and network .
"The Indonesian diaspora continues to maintain unity and encourage one another to advance this nation, so we need such people who have greater experience and a better network," Kalla remarked.
With regard to dual citizenship, the vice president affirmed that it was a good initiative to be considered and pursued.
"It requires many changes, but it can be done if we all agreed to it. However, it is important that we all agree to take steps to advance this nation," added the vice president.
The Indonesian diaspora hopes that the government would also implement the recognition of dual citizenship.
So far, the rules in Indonesia recognize dual citizenship for children of Indonesian descent until the age of 18 years after which they must choose a single nationality.
In the meantime, Law and Human Rights Minister Yassona Laoly stated that the issue of dual citizenship has not been discussed further.
"We want to discuss about dual citizenship, but we have yet to do it since it has not been a priority," Laoly noted.(*)
