Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) expects state institutions to become stronger in combating corruption as part of the governments initiative to enhance accountability and transparency.

The statement was delivered by the president during a speech at the Houses 2015 Annual Session, which was led by House Speaker Zulkifli Hasan, here on Friday.

The president also affirmed that the state institutions are obliged to maintain their authority and synergize to increase the publics confidence at the national and international levels.

"Remember, we are striving for the welfare of the people of Indonesia," the president noted.

President Jokowi remarked that as part of the Supreme Courts law enforcement efforts, it has intensified the implementation of its four-point mission: to maintain the independence of the judiciary, to provide legal services to equitable justice seekers, to improve the quality of leadership of the judiciary, and to enhance the credibility and transparency of the judiciary.

Jokowi also noted that the Supreme Court has achieved a breakthrough in reducing the handling time of cases by expediting the standard time for a case to be sent back to the applicants court, and the implementation of a grooming system to ensure the consistency of decisions.

"By implementing these steps, the performance of handling cases in the Supreme Court would continue to improve," the president stated.

Moreover, the Supreme Court has downsized its leadership, improved transparency of information, and has provided better access to justice seekers.

In 2014, the Constitutional Court had fulfilled its constitutional duty by hearing and giving verdicts on cases of disputes among institutions, representatives, and members and also related to election results in a timely and effective manner.

"The Constitutional Courts decision has also run and has become the basis for the establishment of representative institutions for the House of Representatives, Regional Representatives Council, and Parliament Representatives in provinces, districts, and cities across Indonesia," remarked the president.

He further noted that by giving a verdict on the dispute case for election results for the president and vice president on August 21, 2014, the court has managed to oversee and deliver a succession process for the national leadership in accordance with the constitution and managed to secure a lasting peace. The Indonesian people are optimistic that the Constitutional Court would also be successful in handling disputes related to the results of the regional head elections.

Meanwhile, the development of national law is also supported by the Judicial Commission and the authority to nominate candidates for the post of Supreme Court justice.

The Judicial Commission also continues to run the program to maintain the honor and dignity of judges by increasing their capacity through training, with emphasis on the Judicial Code of Conduct, monitoring, public education on the role and authority of judges, advocates, and ensuring the welfare of judges.

"The performance of state institutions which I earlier said, is part of our noble efforts to improve the capacity and accountability of development in our country to become a more democratic, respected, and dignified nation," the president added.(*)
