Mochammad Wiraksajaya, the public prosecutor of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) also demanded the suspect to pay Rp750 million in fine and Rp2.23 billion in compensation to the state.
Suryadarma was charged with misuse of fund for hajj pilgrims in the period of 2010-2013.
The prosecutor also asked the corruption court to ban Suryadharma from taking part in political activities for at least five years.
Suryadharma was general chairman of the Islamic United Development Party before he was named suspect by KPK.
The prosecutor said if the suspects failed to pay the compensation his assets should be confiscated or he be given longer jail term.
The prosecutor said the suspect did not show repentance and refused to admit wrongdoings, adding his behaviors during the court investigation tended to be to his detriment.
"As a religious affairs minister, the suspect should be more appreciative of the religious values," the prosecutor said.
He said the suspect included his wife, children and other relatives, drivers and friends in the list of officials in charge of hajj pilgrimage that their pilgrimage cost was paid with state fund.
As a result the state suffered a loss of around Rp13.3 billion, he added.
Suryadharma is also charged with using Minister Operational Fund of Rp1.821 billion for personal interest such as for the medical treatment of his son , travel cost , etc.
He was also accused of naming consortium to provide accommodations for hajj pilgrims in Jeddah and Madinah with inflated rents causing a more losses to the state.(*)
