Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesia, as the host of the Organization of Islamic Cooperations (OICs) Extraordinary Meeting on Palestine and Al Quds, has invited the United Nations Permanent Security Council to attend the summit on March 6-7.
"We have sent an invitation, signed by President Joko Widodo, to each permanent member of the UN Security Council," Foreign Affairs Ministry Director of Multilateral Cooperation Hassan Kleib said during a press briefing here on Thursday.
The invitations were sent to permanent members of the UN Security Council in China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Kleib pointed out that Indonesia had invited the Security Council members in a bid for stronger support in following up on the OIC Extraordinary Meetings results as part of the UN assembly for Palestine and Al Quds (Jerusalem) peace process.
"Two of the five UN Security Councils permanent members are also members of the Quartet Group on the Palestine-Israel Peace Process Negotiation, so the meeting will have a stronger impact due to their attendance," he noted.
Besides this, Kleib said as a result of the attendance of the UN Security Council and Quartet members, the OIC would be able to hear direct reports on the progress of peace negotiations after they were halted in May 2015.
Russia and the United States are the two UN Permanent Security Council members that are also members of the Quartet Group on the Palestine-Israel Peace Process Negotiation, along with the UN and European Union.
"As a member of the UN, we are represented by the secretary general of the UN in that group," Kleib stated.
Kleib added that Russia was also expected to attend the event in Jakarta since it plays three roles in the meeting: as one of the OICs observers, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, and as a member of the Quartet Group on the Palestine-Israel Peace Process Negotiation.
As the host of the meeting, Indonesia has also invited 56 OIC member states and four observer states, Thailand, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Russia, and the Republic of Central Africa, to the summit.(*)
