Special remissions have been given to a total of 62,470 convicts ..."Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian government has granted remissions to 62,470 convicts currently serving sentences in the countrys prisons on this years Idul Fitri, commonly known as Lebaran, stated Law and Human Rights Minister Yasona Laoly.
"Special remissions have been given to a total of 62,470 convicts, including 700 who were set free, 16 alleged terrorists, 10,426 drug convicts, and 516 graft convicts," Laoly remarked at the Vice Presidential Palace on Wednesday.
Laoly explained that the proposed remissions for the convicts serving prison terms should be in accordance with Government Regulation No. 99 of 2012 concerning the Second Amendment to Government Regulation No. 32 of 1999.
Special remissions are granted on the occasion of Eid to Muslim prisoners meeting some requirements, such as having served a prison sentence of at least six months, never having violated the rules, and having actively participated in training programs in prisons.
The number of inmates who received special remissions in 2016 increased as compared to that recorded in the previous year.
In 2015, special Eid remissions were granted to 54,434 prisoners of the total 174,789 inmates in prisons and detention centers.
