"As many as 22 sites that contained illegal music content and another 22 sites which carried pirated movies have been blocked," Head of Anti-Piracy Task Force of the Creative Economy Board, Ari Juliano Gema, told a press conference here on Tuesday.
The blocking of these sites reduced the user traffic, even though the website owners changed their domains afterwards.
Such strict action will help bring down the instance of online gambling and advertisements related to prostitution.
Once advertisers realize the traffic will no more come to these sites, they will stop advertising on these sites. These will curb their income channels, Gema added, pointing out that these sites required servers that were very expensive.
The Anti-Piracy Task Force, which was formed in 2015, maintains an intensive coordination with the police, the Ministry of Communication and Information, and the Directorate General of Intellectual Property (HKI), operating under the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, to combat copyright infringement in the country.
Gema stated that a copyright infringement of a movie could potentially result in Rp4 billion worth of losses to the movie industry.
"Piracy in the music industry inflicted Rp trillion worth of losses in 2010," Gema recalled.
The task force is expected to help improve the creative economy sector which grew at a rate of seven percent in 2015.(*)
