Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Iyaad Madani, has praised the Indonesian governments initiative for working towards peace in Palestine.

This was stated in a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and received here on Wednesday.

"The Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Iyaad Madani, has reiterated appreciation for the Indonesian governments initiative in bringing peace in Palestine," the press statement said.

The statement was conveyed during the 43rd session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers. The meeting was opened by the interim president of the Republic of Uzbekistan, H.E. Mr. Shavket Mirziyoyev, on Tuesday (October 18).

Madani pointed out that an extraordinary summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Palestine and Al-Quds Al-Sharif, or Jerusalem, in Jakarta was a breakthrough and recalled the importance of finding a comprehensive resolution to the conflict in the Middle East.

The theme of the 43rd session of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) was "Education and Enlightenment: the Path to Peace and Creativity."

The session was attended by the foreign ministers of the OICs 24 members, including Foreign Minister Retno L.P. Marsudi.

In his opening remarks, President Mirziyoyev affirmed that the OIC should review the history of Islamic civilization, particularly focusing on the fact that Islamic scientists were responsible for many innovations and discoveries.

In that context, President Mirziyoyev welcomed the theme of the OIC meetings as it was relevant to the challenges faced by the Islamic world.

On this occasion, the Secretary General of the OIC, Iyaad Madani, reaffirmed the OICs role in bringing about cooperation initiatives among member countries, especially in the field of education.
