The TNI and the Polri should strengthen the values of pluralism in the country."
Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has expressed his appreciation for the Indonesian Military troops who chose to follow an approach to persuade agitators and kept the situation under control during the massive rally on November 4.

"I am sure Indonesian people from Sabang to Merauke lauded the Indonesian Military for its persuasive approach that helped keep the situation under control and conducive to good law and order," Joko Widodo said here on Monday.

The president urged the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the National Police (Polri) to maintain their sense of solidarity.

"Right from the officers to the soldiers, the armed forces must have a sense of solidarity. The security forces should coordinate with each other in carrying out their duties," the president stated.

If the TNI and the Polri can maintain solidarity, they can secure the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI).

"The TNI and the Polri should strengthen the values of pluralism in the country," the president urged.

The head of state has instructed the TNI not to tolerate any moves aimed at dividing the nation.

"Do not hesitate to secure the NKRI," the president affirmed.

The president called on the TNI to hold aloft the soldiers commitment (Sapta Marga) charter and the five-point personnel oath (Sumpah Prajurit).

President Joko Widodo had earlier expressed regrets over the clash after the demonstration on November 4 in front of the Merdeka Palace here.

"We deplore the incident that happened after the Isha (evening prayers) when crowds that should have dispersed turned violent. We understand that the situation was exploited by certain political actors," Jokowi noted at a press conference at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta early Saturday.

The clash occurred in front of the Merdeka Palace in Jalan Medan Merdeka Utara and Medan Merdeka Barat after the crowd of people began to disperse, as requested by the field coordinator.

Jokowi also appreciated the Muslim scholars, Habib and Muslim leaders who ensured that the rally went off smooth in an orderly manner and according to the rules.

The Head of State also revealed that it was agreed in the meeting with the representatives of the demonstrators that legal proceedings against Jakarta Governor Basuki Purnama Tjahaja will be conducted firmly, expeditiously and in a transparent manner.

Therefore, the president asked the demonstrators to return to their homes in an orderly manner and avoid any provocation.
