The park, located around 90km to the south of Jakarta, is home to many animals including Javanese gibbon, Javanese eagle, pangolin and leopard.Sukabumi, W Java (ANTARA News) - The Mount Gede-Pangrango National Park (TNGGP) Board will temporarily close the climbing lane in the park from December 31, 2016 until March 31 next year.
"The hiking activity is being closed as a conservation effort to preserve the ecosystem of Mount Gede Pangrango National Park," Head of the TNGGP Board, Suyatno Sukandar, noted here on Friday.
Till year-end, the hiking activity will be permitted at the national park which has several entrances from Cibodas, Mount Putri in Bogor and Selabintana in Sukabumi.
However, hikers are recommended to prepare properly, and carry sufficient logistical needs, a medical kit and camping equipment before starting the ascent. The trek can witness high intensity rain, requiring extra caution.
"The weather condition along the hiking route can be unpredictable and often, a thick mist descends that may obstruct visibility," Sukandar noted.
The authority has also tasked several officers to guard the national park from trespassers who enter the park through illegal routes.
Sukandar also urged hikers to play their role in preserving the ecosystem and the facilities of Mount Gede and Pangrango as well as in keeping the parks environment clean of garbage.
Mount Gede Pangrango National Park is a national facility in West Java and is centered around two volcanoes: Mount Gede and Mount Pangrango.
