Bandung, W Java (ANTARA News) - A team of surgeons of the Hasan Sadikin Public Hospital (RSUP) successfully separated a pair of conjoined twins in a marathon surgery that lasted more than 20 hours.

The operation began on Thursday morning and finished around half past one on Friday morning, Director of Medical and Nursing of RSUP Nucky Nursjamsi Hidajat said here on Friday.

As many as 53 medical personnel, consisting of doctors and nurses, were involved in the complex surgery .

"The surgery involves separations of legs, left thigh, and hipbones," Hidajat said.

The two-year-old twins Devina and Devani, from Sumedang District of West Java Province, were conjoined at the waist and shared one lower intestine, one bladder, and one anus. So, the doctors had to make an artificial anus in the belly of one of the babies, Hidajat said.

Meanwhile, Dedi Mulyadi, the head of the Regional Representative Council of the Golkar Party of West Java, who is also the district head of Purwakarta, said that he and his counterparts in the party will help cover the cost of the surgery.

The operation cost around Rp500 million (one US dollar equals around Rp13,400), of which Rp20 million has been covered by the Healthcare and Social Security Agency (BPJS), Mulyadi disclosed.

Mulyadi said that he first met the twin girls during a working visit in Sumedang District.(*)
