Cabinet Secretary Pramono Anung conveyed the decision after a meeting on evaluation of the National Exams held by the president here on Monday.
"The president has made a decision on national exams. It will be carried out, with some improvements," Pramono Anung said.
Among the reforms suggested is the need to increase the competency of teachers, especially of those who have obtained professional certification, and evaluate their performance.
"Thus, the national exams could be used as a benchmark of students achievement," he added.
In addition, he said, the government will prepare national guidelines for subjects to be tested in the exam.
Earlier, in November, Cultural and Education Minister Muhadjir Effendy said that the ministry planned to impose a moratorium on national examinations at all educational levels starting next year.
Muhadjir said that if the ministry decided to implement another exam in future it was likely to be managed by regional administrations instead of the central government.
National exams are held annually across the country for all classes.(*)
