The representatives of the foreign countries were from Sri Lanka, Australia, United States, Canada, Denmark, France, Brazil, Mozambique, Germany, the UK and Singapore among others, ANTARA learned here on Wednesday.
In the meantime, ambassador of Sri Lanka Damas Parera stated that the Jakarta gubernatorial election was a reflection of the democratic tradition in Indonesia. He also praised the professional implementation of the election.
"It is a great honor (for us) to be here to share opinions about the electoral process in Indonesia. What we see today is a reflection of the democratic traditions of this country," the envoy disclosed.
Parera, along with personnel of the Jakarta General Election Commission (KPU DKI Jakarta), monitored a number of polling stations. He believed that the election was well implemented.
"The election was an organized, professional, and regulated one, with special attention to certain details, so that voters could choose conveniently and freely," he explained.
According to him, besides having a good ability to hold the elections, Jakartans had addressed democracy and elections with full enthusiasm and respect.
"Jakartas community respects the principles of democracy. Congratulations Jakarta and Indonesia," Parera remarked.
The Jakarta gubernatorial runoff election was held after no candidate pair won the majority in the first round of the Jakarta regional head election held on Feb 15, which was contested by three candidate pairs.
The three candidate pairs who took part in the Feb 15 election were pair number 1 Agus Harimurti-Sylviana Murni, number 2 Basuki Tjahaja Purnama-Djarot Saiful Hidayat, and pair number 3 Anies Baswedan-Sandiaga Uno.
In the first round election, Agus who is the son of former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, collected the least votes.
Anies and Sandi pair is expected to lead Jakarta for the next five-year period from 2017 to 2022.
A total of 7.2 million eligible voters in Jakarta cast their votes in the Jakarta runoff election on Wednesday.
Earlier, Basuki and Hidayat congratulated the victory of Baswedan- Uno pair based on quick count results. (*)
