Jakarta (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has told the people in a number of regions and districts, which will hold regional elections to maintain unity despite difference in their favorites for their regional leaders.

Political campaigns ahead of the regional elections should not be degraded into a slanging match, insulting each other, spreading hoaxes, false information, etc. especially in social media, Jokowi said when addressing National Dzikir (chanting in praise of God) and the opening of National Working Meeting of the Hubbul Wathon Dzikir Council here on Wednesday.

The president called for maintaining social harmony saying the people especially women and children would be the one to suffer the hardest as a result of internal conflicts.

Peace and harmony would allow the government to develop and improve the economic condition and welfare of the people, he added.

"This is the duty of all of us including ulemas to maintain a peaceful condition and to avoid conflicts even minor conflicts?" the president said.

Present at the ceremony included a number of Islamic leaders, Religious Affairs Minister Lukman Hakim Saifudin, Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu, Military Chief Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto, Presidential Chief of Staff Moeldoko and Speaker of the Regional Representative Council Oesman Sapta Odang.

The National Working Meeting to last from Feb. 21 to 23 uses a theme of "Strengthening Islamic Commitment to Nationality Toward National Order?"

After the ceremony, the president flew to Bandung, West Java, for a working visit.
