Singapore, (ANTARA News) - The Singapore Voters Registration Committee is currently conducting verification of 117 thousand Indonesian citizens for the right to vote in the country for the 2019 general elections.

"Verification of 117 thousand Indonesian citizens is being conducted based on data provided by the General Elections Commission (KPU) of Indonesia," Indonesian Ambassador to Singapore I Gede Ngurah Swajaya had stated on Tuesday.

The committee conducted verification by telephonically contacting each individual listed in the KPU`s data.

Based on the results of temporary verification, some 25 thousand Indonesian citizens could not be identified, as only data pertaining to their name and date of birth was available.

However, the committee has successfully matched data of some 45 thousand other Indonesian citizens.

"We still need to send post to some 40 thousand other people," he said.

The committee comprises Indonesian citizens residing in Singapore and hailing from varied backgrounds, while some of them are migrant workers, who have obtained permission from their employers.

"The Singapore Voters Registration Committee is not from the Indonesian Embassy. It occupies a room in the embassy," he clarified.

The 2019 elections in Singapore are planned to be held on Sunday, April 14, 2019, a few days after the implementation of the simultaneous elections in Indonesia.

Sunday has been selected for the voting day, as most workers and students are on holiday over the weekend.

The presidential election was earlier scheduled to be held simultaneously along with the legislative elections on April 17, 2019. Registration of presidential and vice presidential candidates, meanwhile, is scheduled to be held in August in 2018.
