Bogor, W. Java (ANTARA News) - Indonesia and the Democratic Republic of Timor Leste have agreed to start negotiations on investment promotion and protection agreement.

"We have agreed to start the negotiation process to reach an agreement on investment promotion and protection, and the agreement to avoid double taxation," President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) stated at a joint press conference with Timor Leste President Francisco Guterres Lu Olo at the Bogor Presidential Palace on Thursday.

Jokowi expressed confidence that Timor Leste would provide legal certainty and insurance for Indonesian investment.

The two countries have also begun negotiations on the double taxation agreement and development of connectivity in Timor Leste.

"Included in the cooperation on connectivity is the construction of Mota`ain bridge to connect Mota`ain and Batu Gading regions as well as the increase in flight frequency. We praised the decision to start the Kupang-Dili flight route after 10 years of negotiations," Jokowi noted.

In addition to cooperation in connectivity, Indonesia will be ready to work on cooperation with Timor Leste on land transportation, with state-run land transport firm Perum Damri serving the Kupang-Dili route.

To handle social and cultural issues, Indonesia and Timor Leste have reached an agreement in capacity building and education.

Jokowi remarked that the government will welcome Timor Leste`s students to study in Indonesia.
