Dompu, W. Nusa Tenggara (ANTARA News) - President Joko Widodo has inaugurated Tanju Dam in Tanju Village of Manggelewa Sub-district in Dompu, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), on Monday.

The president and First Lady Iriana arrived at the location in the company of Public Works and Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono and NTB Governor Zainul Majdi.

"With this dam, we hope that the agriculture sector in Dompu would be developed faster. Bismillahirrahmanirrahim (in the name of Allah), I inaugurate Tanju Dam in Dompu, NTB," the president stated.

The construction of the 387-hectare dam has cost Rp124 billion (US$8.5 million). With a capacity of 18 million cubic meters, the dam will irrigate 2,250 hectares of agriculture land in the region.

President Jokowi has expressed hope that the dam would help local farmers to increase their planting frequency from once to thrice a year.

The Tanju Dam is situated in Tanju Village, Manggalewa Sub-district, in Dompu District of NTB. Construction of the dam was started in 2015 after relocating 400 families living in the area.

The relocated families have received new houses and land as substitute.

The dam will serve the purposes of irrigation, conservation, and aquaculture as well as a clean water reservoir.
