Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesian fencing athletes competing in the men`s team`s floret category advanced to the quarterfinals after narrowly winning against the Thai team, 45-40, in the 18th Asian Games at the Jakarta Convention Center, Cendrawasih, Jakarta, Friday.

The Indonesian men`s team`s victory in the floret class in the last 16 was strengthened by athletes Mohammad Zulfikar, Muhammad Fatah Prasetyo and Ihsan Ariesda Solihin, while the Thai athletes were Mayakaran Chornnasum, Deejing Ratchanavi, and Doungpatra.

In the big 16th round of the women`s team, the Indonesian team had to concede defeat to the Indian team, with a 23-45 score.

Following defeat in a fairly fierce battle, the Indonesian women`s team ran aground in hopes of qualifying for the next round.

The Indonesian men`s team in the quarterfinals will face athletes from the Hong Kong team strengthened by Ceung Ka Long, Choi Cun Yin, Yeung Chi Ka, and Choi Nicholas.

Indonesian fencing athlete Mohmmad Zulfikar claimed his side would fight it out in the quarterfinals to be able to improve its ranking in fencing.

"We will do our best in the fight against the team from Singapore. Hopefully, with this struggle, we would be able to realize the aspirations of entering the top eight," he stated.

Until this afternoon, the medals won in fencing comprised Korea, with five gold, two silver, and six bronze medals; China, with two gold, six silver, and one bronze; Japan, two gold and four bronze; Kazakshtan, one gold and two bronze; Iran, one silver and one bronze; and Singapore, with a bronze medal.
