"The sample houses that can withstand quakes will be built by the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing to serve as a reference for people in the near future," Head of the Mataram City Public Works and Spatial Planning Office Mahmuddin stated here on Thursday.
According to Mahmuddin, Selagalas Park is selected as the location for the construction of such earthquake-resistant houses, as it is located in proximity to the four areas affected by the recent massive quakes.
In addition, the public, including out-of-town residents, keen on building earthquake-resistant houses, can also come to get a close glimpse of the specifications of such earthquake-resistant houses.
"Thus, anyone can directly have a look at the sample houses based on the earthquake-resistant concept, including how to assemble a house frame," he explained.
Two units will be built as sample structures in Selagalas Park: type 36 on the first floor and type 36 on the second floor, or size 18x18 meters.
Construction of the two types of sample structures is aimed at offering people an alternative construction for earthquake-resistant houses, especially for those having limited land but a large number of families.
In addition to building earthquake-resistant houses, his office will provide information and education on the earthquake-resistant houses.
President Joko Widodo had earlier noted that the government will send 400 engineers to accompany people in Lombok to build some 74 thousand earthquake-proof houses to replace those destroyed in the recent earthquake on the eastern island.
In a press release, the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing noted that the rehabilitation and construction of houses had been accelerated in line with the president`s instruction.
The rehabilitation and construction of houses are expected to be completed in the next six months.
President Widodo has decided to offer Rp50 million to each of the owners of the houses destroyed by the earthquake.
People will build their houses with assistance from the Ministry of Public Works and Housing and the military.
As a result of the strong earthquakes, including the 7.0-magnitude quake that shook Lombok Island on Aug 5, according to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, as of Aug 23, at least 555 people were killed, and 829 others were injured.
Most fatalities were the residents of North Lombok District areas due to their proximity to the strong earthquake`s epicenter. The repeated earthquakes have also damaged 23,098 houses and led to the forced displacement of 134,236 people.
