Baubau, SE Sulawesi (ANTARA News) - The Baubau city government needs to be more serious in developing the maritime industry and services and in preparing its residents for surviving the era of disruption, an expert of the Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) stated.

Speaking at the Baubau city government`s coordinating meeting here on Saturday, Professor Rokhmin Dahuri remarked that the maritime industry and services had become one of the six prioritized manufacturing sectors that Indonesia has been focusing on.

The other five prioritized sectors include design and construction, pharmaceutical industry, creative and hospitality industry, renewable and green energy, as well as engine and machinery equipment, the former minister of maritime affairs noted.

During the coordinating meeting attended by Baubau Mayor A.S. Tamrin as well as tens of city government officials and village and sub-district heads, he elaborated on a road map of the city`s economic development that needs to be adopted.

To enable Baubau, one of the cities in Southeast Sulawesi Province, to achieve sustainable economic development, with high competitiveness in Indonesia and beyond, Dahuri noted that its residents need to be trained to meet the demands of Industry 4.0.

Hence, during the second leadership term of Baubau Mayor Tamrin, the city government needs to have a development policy in place that gives importance to maintaining a balance between preserving the environment and gaining economic progress.

In implementing its urban development in spatial planning documents, the city government is recommended to allocate at least 30 percent of the city`s total areas for conservation, including protected forests, rivers, and cultural sites, he revealed.

The existing economic sectors also need to be revitalized to make them more productive, efficient, competitive, inclusive, and sustainable, Dahuri, currently a marine expert of IPB and cadre of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle, noted.

Located in Buton Island, the city of Baubau has a strategic geographical location in the country`s shipping lines for decades, and it has been playing an important role as a transit seaport since the 16th century of the Buton Sultanate era.
