Malang, E Java (ANTARA News) - The government has stated that 999 traditional markets will be revived both physically and non-physically in 2019 from the target of 5,000 units.

Director General of Domestic Trade at the Ministry of Trade Tjahya Widayanti said in 2019, the government would revive traditional markets by building a prototype of a type C market, funded by the special allocation fund and assistance funds.

"We are sure that the target of revitalizing traditional markets can reach up to 5,000 units," Tjahya told Antara via a phone call on Friday.

Tjahya explained that 184 traditional markets would be revitalized using assistance funds totaling Rp1.159 trillion. Meanwhile, the other 815 markets will be revitalized using special funds with a budget of Rp1.302 trillion.

A traditional type C market has an area of approximately 500 square meters with a minimum of 50 traders and operates twice a week.

The Ministry of Trade will take several steps in conducting non-physical revitalization. Among them are conducting training on market management for 300 traditional market managers, and attracting consumers to the markets.

The government will also conduct a Market School for traders to improve their ability to trade and service consumers with better standards, and conduct training on e-payment for market managers and traders.

"We will also provide assistance to the local administrations and market managers to obtain the National Standard Market Certification of 8125," Tjahya said.

The Ministry of Cooperatives and Small and Medium Enterprises also revitalized a number of traditional markets, so that overall in 2019, there will be 1,037 units revitalized.

During the period of 2015-2019, the total funding for the construction and revitalization of traditional markets reached Rp12.74 trillion.

Meanwhile, the number of revitalized market is 5,218 units, exceeding the target of 5,000 units.
