Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) faction in the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) has suggested to form a general election special committee for investigating a plethora of issues concerning the 2019 general election.

"The PKS faction believes it is important to exercise the right of investigation or inquiry at the DPR RI and thereafter set up a special committee to oversee the implementation of the 2019 general election," member of the PKS faction Ledia Hanifa remarked at a plenary meeting of the DPR RI at the parliament building in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The faction pointed out that the recently concluded general election has left the country in mourning, as 554 people, comprising election officers, election supervisors, and police officers had died and 788 others had undergone hospitalization.

At the same time, the people were left in the lurch owing to incorrect input of data at the General Election Commission (KPU). Hence, the special committee will be responsible for probing whether the erroneous data input was intentional, she noted.

"We noticed several issues during the 2019 general election, including vote miscalculation and several fatalities, indicating that the DPR should conduct a thorough assessment of the problems by establishing a special committee on general elections," she stated.

The DPR has supervisory authority stipulated in article 20a, paragraphs (1) and (2) of the 1945 Constitution in which any DPR member has the rights of inquiry, proposal, opinion, and immunity.
