Bintan, Riau Islands (ANTARA) - The Bintan Police in Riau Islands managed to prevent the culmination of a drug smuggling plan to Sumatra and Jakarta and confiscated 118,521 grams of methamphetamine from the suspects.

The drugs were supposedly smuggled from Malaysia through the waters of Senggiling in Bintan, Bintan Police Chief Adjunct Senior Commissioner Boy Herlambang stated here on Wednesday.

In connection with the case, the police have named three suspects -- JF (38), SY (38), and ZH (36) -- serving as drug couriers. All suspects are the residents of Bintan Island and work as school bus drivers.

"They were arrested through close coordination between personnel of the North Bintan Police and Bintan Police," Herlambang remarked.

The police had earlier received a tip-off of the drug transaction plan at Sakera Beach, North Bintan, on late Friday (Aug 30).

The police arrested suspect JF from the location, while another suspect SY was arrested from JF's house in Tanjung Uban.

The police also unearthed 118.521 kg of methamphetamine, some packed in suitcases, while others were concealed in a washing machine and a car parked in front of the house.

Another suspect ZH was arrested at a different location on the basis of information of the two suspects, Herlambang revealed.

The suspects admitted that it was the sixth time that they had smuggled drugs from Malaysia into Bintan Island.

He stated that the police had conducted further investigation into the case.

The three suspects were charged with Law No. 35 of 2009 on narcotics and are liable to face death penalty. Related news: Narcotics agency destroys meth smuggled from Malaysia
