Jakarta (ANTARA) - Vice President Ma'ruf Amin is optimistic that the Islamic organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) would play a notable role in creating peace through religious approaches, both at the national and international levels.

"I am upbeat about NU playing a great and important role in creating peace not only at the national but also global scale. I believe that through this 34th congress, the NU can fulfill the role," he remarked while attending a function held to mark NU's 94th anniversary at the NU Central Executive Board Building in Jakarta on Friday night.

Religious approaches are perceived as one of the solutions to humanitarian conflicts in the world when political and military approaches can no longer be the main choice to solve the conflicts, he pointed out.

"Political approaches, much less weaponry approaches, have failed to reconcile (the conflicting parties) at present. Hence, looking ahead, I believe that only religious approaches will be able to settle the global conflict," he noted.

Every religion teaches peace and tolerance, so it becomes a key for governments and all parties involved in the conflict to prioritize religious approaches to settle it, he remarked.

The vice president further expressed hope that religions would not become a source of conflict but rather serve as a means of creating and maintaining harmony among human beings.

Religions should become a source of harmony in the community, both at the national and international levels, he stated.

"I hope religions would not become a source of conflict, but they would become a source of harmony both at the national and international levels. We should not only live in harmony but also reconcile (the conflicting parties)," he noted.
