"Right now, as the host, our preparations have reached more than 70 percent, including infrastructure and electricity," Banyuwangi District Head Abdullah Azwar Anas stated here on Tuesday.
Anas pointed to the international committee not having canceled the event, despite the current coronavirus outbreak in several countries.
Some 54 people, mostly the world's best surfers, will participate in the 3rd WSL Championship Tour 2020 to be held on Plengkung Beach.
Steven Roberston, Asia Manager of WSL, the world surfing event management board, personally conveyed the news of the appointment of Banyuwangi as the host, Anas stated.
"The WSL meeting in the United States decided that one of the 11 series of the best surfing competition in the world in 2020 will be held in Banyuwangi," Anas remarked, adding that Banyuwangi felt immense pride on being able to host the prestigious event.
In the meantime, the WSL Championship Tour is the most prestigious surfing leagues in the world and comprises 11 surfing events that usually start from April to December annually on various beaches across the world.
