The Surabaya city government has assisted the public in marketing the products of urban farming, particularly in the Citraland Fresh Market."
Surabaya, E Java (ANTARA) - The Surabaya City Development Planning Board (Bappeko) highlighted the role of urban farming in lowering the poverty rate and empowering the economy of people from the low-income group in the city.

Urban farming is one of the Surabaya city government's programs to empower the public in the agricultural sector, Bappeko Chief Eri Cahyadi stated here on Monday.

"The Surabaya city government has assisted the public in marketing the products of urban farming, particularly in the Citraland Fresh Market," he noted.

He remarked that the city government, through the Food Security and Agriculture Office (DKPP), also offered coaching on food diversification to local residents in the city.

"The sources of foods for the residents of Surabaya City would cover not only rice but also corn, cassava, and other carbohydrates," he remarked.

The city government will also utilize idle land owned by the city government for growing medicinal plants and developing urban farming, he expounded.

"Urban farming is aimed at supporting not only food security but also the green belt," he stated.

The green belt in Surabaya currently constitutes 20 percent of the city's territory in accordance with Law No. 26 of 2007 on Spatial Layout.

DKPP Head Yuniarto Herlambang earlier revealed that the office had, so far, offered coaching and stimulus aid, in the form of seeds, to city residents interested in urban farming to develop food crops and horticultural products.
