Banda Aceh, Aceh (ANTARA) - Floods submerging several sub-districts since Dec 4 claimed one life while caused severe damage to four bridges and 16 homes in addition to minor damage to other homes in East Aceh District, Aceh Province.

"A total of four bridges and 16 houses were severely damaged, while two houses were slightly damaged," Sunawardi, head of the Aceh Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBA), stated here on Tuesday.

Flooding affected 285 villages in 19 sub-districts in East Aceh. Peureulak Timur, Julok, Peudawa, Birem Bayeun, Sungai Raya, Indra Makmur, Peurelak, Ranto Peurelak, Pante Bidari, Idi Tunong, Nurussalam, Peureulak Barat, Idi Rayeuk, Darul Ihsan, Madat, Darul Aman, Simpang Ulim, Banda Alam, and Darul Falah were the affected sub-districts.

One bridge and four houses in Peudawa, a bridge in Pereulak, two houses in Julok, a bridge in Idi Tunong, a bridge and a house in West Pereulak, and 11 houses in Banda Alam incurred damage as a result of the floods.

"As many as 86,724 people of 25,641 families were affected by flooding, including 21,397 individuals of 6,969 families being displaced, while one teenager, identified as Lia Rahmadani, 14, had died," Sunawardi remarked.

The floodwaters have currently begun residing, and those seeking refuge in mosques and neighbors' houses have started returning to their homes.

"Incessant heavy rains that lashed East Aceh District since last Thursday (Dec 3) caused flooding in several sub-districts. BPBD East Aceh immediately dispatched a disaster management task force to collect data, conduct evacuation, and distribute relief aid," he stated.
