Cianjur, W Java (ANTARA) - The Cianjur District Health Office in West Java on Wednesday posted thousands of volunteers and hundreds of medical workers at polling stations across the district to prevent the emergence of fresh clusters of COVID-19.

Head of the Cianjur District Health Office, Irvan Nur Fauzi, said the number of volunteers and medical workers stationed at the polling stations was 4,968 and 437, respectively.

All public health service posts in the district remained open while the district head election was under way, he informed.

"One volunteer has been stationed at each polling station, while medical workers are on standby at each sub-district head office, so they will act quickly if needed," Fauzi said.

The volunteers were tasked with checking the body temperature of local residents who went to cast their ballot and ensuring they wore masks, washed hands, and used gloves made available to them before entering polling stations, he informed.

Indonesia, the world's third-largest democracy after the US and India, is holding regional head elections in 270 regions comprising 9 provinces, 37 cities, and 224 districts. The campaign period lasted from September 26 to December 5, 2020.

A total of 734 nominee pairs have registered as candidate pairs for the polls.

The Indonesian General Elections Commission (KPU) has been implementing health protocols at each stage of the elections, right from the campaigning period to voting.

The agency has also issued a General Election Commission Regulation (PKPU) on holding of regional elections amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
