The Aceh quake was the third of its kind to occur since early Thursday
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Three earthquakes, measuring above 5.0 on the Richter scale, struck Indonesia since early Thursday, according to the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).

The first quake of magnitude 5.7 rocked Bengkulu Province at 00:28:35 West Indonesia Standard Time (WIB), the second 6.2-magnitude earthquake rattled Tomini Bay in Central Sulawesi Province at 03:59:37 WIB, and the third quake of magnitude 5.0 shook Aceh Province at 08:27:30 WIB, according to the agency.

"The Aceh quake was the third of its kind to occur since early Thursday," Coordinator of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation Section Daryono stated on Thursday.

Epicenters of the three quakes were located in the sea, he remarked.

The Aceh quake was centered 132 kilometers northwest of Sabang City at a depth of 64 kilometers. Akin to the Bengkulu and Tomini quakes, the Aceh quake was triggered by subduction activities of plates, he explained.

The three quakes were felt at Modified Mercalli Intensity II-III that led to local residents fleeing outdoors.

No immediate report was received of casualties and material damage caused by the three quakes.

No tsunami warning was issued following the three quakes centered at sea.

Indonesia sits on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a volcanologically active terrestrial chain where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions can occur any time.
