Jakarta (ANTARA) - Unremitting rains and the overflowing of Ciliwung River triggered flooding in Pejaten, South Jakarta, thereby resulting in at least 28 people being forced to flee to higher grounds, according to the Jakarta Fire Brigade (Damkar).

"This morning, 28 people have been evacuated by the Jakarta Damkar personnel from Sector IX of Pasar Minggu. They comprise 20 adults, seven children, and one toddler," Jakarta Damkar wrote on its Instagram account @humasjakfire on Monday.

Firefighters began evacuating residents at around 3 a.m. local time, as floodwaters continued to rise in the East Pejaten area while the Cilwiung River overflowed its bank.

The evacuees were temporarily accommodated at the Al Makmur Mosque, Pejaten.

Damkar rescue personnel remained on standby at the location and advised the public to evacuate immediately.

The Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD) has reminded residents along the Ciliwung River bank to exercise vigil since the water level at the Katulampa sluice in Bogor, West Java, had risen to alert III status since Sunday.

The rising water level at Katulampa Weir in the upstream Bogor area could have a serious impact on the downstream residential areas in Jakarta.

In East Pejaten located in Pasar Minggu Sub-district, floodwaters reached a height of up to 170 centimeters and affected 215 families. Related news: Flooding submerges 12 sub-districts in West Java's Bekasi District
