The quake, which struck at 5:24 Western Indonesia Time (WIB), was centered some 128 kilometers southeast of Melonguane, at a depth of 10 kilometers, the BMKG noted on its official website.
Despite no issuance of a tsunami warning, the agency warned of aftershock following the quake.
Wednesday's quake was the third to have hit Melonguane since early this month.
A 5.1-magnitude quake struck 17 kilometers southwest of Melonguane on February 2, while a 5.3-magnitude quake hit 112 kilometers northeast of Melonguane on February 10. (INE)
