On behalf of the East Kalimantan provincial government and community, Governor Isran Noor offered condolences over the accident befalling the crew members of the submarine KRI Nanggala 402.
Samarinda, E Kalimantan (ANTARA) - East Kalimantan Governor Isran Noor urged the provincial government and private institutions to fly Indonesia's flag at half-mast for three days to honor 53 naval personnel, who died on duty aboard submarine KRI Nanggala 402.

The governor made the call shortly after receiving information that all crew members of the submarine were pronounced dead, Head of the Public Relations Bureau at the Secretariat of the East Kalimantan Provincial Government M. Syafranuddin stated here on Monday.

"On behalf of the East Kalimantan provincial government and community, Governor Isran Noor offered condolences over the accident befalling the crew members of the submarine KRI Nanggala 402. The naval soldiers, who died in the line of duty are the best soldiers," he remarked.

The governor appealed to the people of East Kalimantan to pray that Allah SWT forgives the fallen naval soldiers and accepts their good deeds. May they die a martyr and their bereaved families remain resilient.

"The East Kalimantan provincial government and people are proud of the KRI Nanggala 402 crew members that continued to perform their duties with all risks under the sea," he stated.

Contact with the German-made submarine was lost while it was preparing for a torpedo drill on Wednesday (April 24).

Indonesian Navy’s Chief of Staff, Admiral Yudo Margono, confirmed that the submarine had sunk after several of its components were retrieved during the search mission.

"The components (that were found) are torpedo tube-straighteners, coolant pipes wrap, a bottle of periscope lubricating oil, prayer mats, and heat-retaining sponges," Margono disclosed at a recent press conference.
