Competition is still healthy. There is no indication of monopoly on the marketplace, because strong competitors, such as Lazada, Shopee, Bukalapak and others, still exist
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Following the Gojek-Tokopedia merger, there was no indication yet of market control, or monopoly, especially in the electronic commerce sector, on the online trading platform (marketplace), Business Competition Supervisory Commission (KPPU) Chairman Kodrat Wibowo stated.

"Competition is still healthy. There is no indication of monopoly on the marketplace, because strong competitors, such as Lazada, Shopee, Bukalapak and others, still exist," Kodrat stated when contacted in Jakarta on Monday.

Gojek and Tokopedia have officially announced the merger or business merger that resulted in the creation of a novel entity known as GoTo on Monday, May 17, 2021.

GoTo is a company that combines e-commerce services, transportation, goods delivery, food, and payment systems and digital finance into one ecosystem.

Several parties had earlier accused the merger of the two large Indonesian companies of triggering a monopoly, especially in the e-commerce business.

Even so, the KPPU has not been able to officially issue a comprehensive assessment of the institution, as it had yet to receive reports about the merger from Gojek and Tokopedia.

"In accordance with the law, the one behind a merger or acquisition must report to the KPPU no later than 30 days after being legally approved by the Ministry of Law and Human Rights," Kodrat revealed.

On receiving the report, the KPPU will study the submitted documents pertaining to this corporate action. The results will only be issued after an official institutional assessment.

Kodrat has ensured that the KPPU will not allow a monopoly to occur in Indonesia, including in the corporate action of the Gojek and Tokopedia merger.

Hence, he emphasized that the KPPU will study and examine the merger documents as judiciously as possible to rule out any possibility of a monopoly.

This aligns with the KPPU's spirit of fighting monopoly that impacted the welfare of society, especially having a negative impact on consumers, as monopoly creates a situation wherein consumers no longer have a choice, he stated.
