Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) urged the public to stay vigilant to torrential rains along with lightning that are forecast to occur in several regions of Indonesia.

According to data collected by Antara from the official BKMG website here on Friday, such weather conditions can potentially occur in Aceh, West Sumatra, Bengkulu, South-East Sulawesi, and Papua.

Meanwhile, other regions forecast to also receive heavy rains accompanied by lightning and whirlwinds are North Sumatra, Riau, Jambi, South Sumatra, Lampung, Banten West Java, Jakarta, South Kalimantan, Central Sulawesi, North Maluku, and West Papua.

However, East Java is forecast to experience gusty winds.

The BMKG has urged the public to be wary of high waves reaching heights of between 2.5 and four meters in the waters of West Aceh, in the waters west of Simeulue Island to Mentawai Islands, in the waters of Bengkulu to western Lampung, and the Indian Ocean west of Sumatra.

Similar conditions are forecast to occur in the western and southern parts of Sunda Strait, in the waters south of Banten to Sumbawa, southern part of Bali-Lombok-Alas Starait, Indian Ocean south of Banten to East Nusa Tenggara, waters of south Sermata-Tanibar Islands, and Arafuru Sea.

The BMKG has urged residents to be heedful of the high risks to shipping safety for fishing boats, barges, ferries, and large vessels, such as cargo or cruise ships.
