This will be a real risk since we are talking about timeline and climate change while we are talking about Indonesia 2045
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati expressed concern over the threat posed by climate change to Indonesia as an archipelagic state at the 2045 Indonesia book launch here on Friday.

According to a report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) on the impact of climate change in Southeast Asia, Indonesia will be one of the countries that would experience the extraordinary impact of climatic changes, she noted.

This impact would include forest fires, floods that would engulf cities, as well as rising sea levels, she informed.

She asserted that the impacts and threats of climate change could potentially be felt when Indonesia celebrates hundred years of independence in 2045.

"This will be a real risk since we are talking about timeline and climate change while we are talking about Indonesia 2045," the minister remarked.

Indrawati, who is also co-chair of the Coalition of Finance Ministers for Climate Action, said the topic of climate change is a contemporary one and has become a complicated issue at the global level.

Nations across the world, including Indonesia, have to become capable of realizing development with net zero emissions in order to mitigate the potential impact of climate change, she stressed.

The minister also urged millennial academicians to direct their attention toward the issue, which has become one of the biggest challenges for people today.

"This has to start right now," she emphasized.

Earlier, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) had also urged the government to make a commitment to mitigate the impact of climate change.

BMKG head Dwikorita Karnawati had listed several actions that the government could take to do this, such as the adoption of a sustainable zoning plan and the promotion of renewable energy resources.
