Jakarta (ANTARA) - The COVID-19 surge in other countries should be a lesson for Indonesians to not be careless in following the health protocols, government spokesperson for COVID-19 handling, Reisa Broto Asmoro, has said.

"We must learn from other countries, especially in Europe, where cases surge occurred again due to carelessness in complying with health protocols," Asmoro, who is also the Ambassador for the Adaptation of New Habits, said during a 'Stay Alert When COVID-19 Sweeps' talk organized by the Health Ministry, which was accessed from here on Monday.

The rate of COVID-19 cases in Indonesia is consistently sloping, she noted. As of November 6, 2021, the positivity rate for COVID-19 in the country was below 1 percent, she pointed out.

Nevertheless, she said, people must not be careless in following the health protocols.

Based on the COVID-19 Task Force's records, there has been an increase in coronavirus cases in nine provinces in the past week: Lampung, West Java, East Java, Banten, Bali, North Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, North Maluku, and Papua, Asmoro informed.

However, the spokesperson affirmed that the increase is still under control.

The permission for resumption of activities in public places such as offices and shopping centers must be accompanied by strict health protocols to avoid a spike in COVID-19 cases, she said.

"Even though it (COVID-19 case rate) is now sloping, remember we are still in the midst of a pandemic. The permission of public activities must be balanced with strict health protocols," she added.

The first case of COVID-19 was confirmed in Indonesia in March 2020. According to data from the COVID-19 Handling Task Force, as of November 8, 2021, at least 4,248,409 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in the country, while 4,095,078 people have recovered and 143,557 people have succumbed to the deadly virus.
