Residents in the northern shorelines of Larantuka and Adonara Island should move to a higher ground or hills to avoid the threat of tsunami
Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has reported that tsunamis have been detected in two regions in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) measuring 0.07 m in height following a 7.4 magnitude earthquake that struck the Flores Sea.

BMKG said here on Tuesday that tsunamis were detected in Marapokot, Nagekeo District at 10:36 a.m. Western Indoesia Standard Time (WIB) and at Reo in Manggarai District at 10:39 a.m. WIB in East Nusa Tenggara.

Earlier, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck the Flores Sea at a depth of 10 km on Tuesday at 10:20 a.m. WIB. The location of the earthquake was 112 km northwest of Larantuka, East Flores District, East Nusa Tenggara.

BMKG issued tsunami warnings for Ende Island, North of East Flores, Sikka Island, North Sikka, North Ende, Lembata Island, Adonara Islanda, North Manggarai, North Ngada, and North Alor in East Nusa Tenggara.

The warning status also applied in Buton and Bombana in Southeast Sulawesi.

Meanwhile, an alert status was issued for West Manggarai in West Nusa Tenggara, Wakatobi in Southeast Sulawesi, North Bima and Dompu in West Nusa Tenggara and Wetar Island in Maluku.

Deputy District Head of East Flores Agustinus Payong Bali has stated that residents in shoreline areas should momentarily evacuate.

"Residents in the northern shorelines of Larantuka and Adonara Island should move to a higher ground or hills to avoid the threat of tsunami," he noted in Kupang on Tuesday.

This evacuation recommendation was issued as part of efforts to mitigate the potential of tsunami disasters caused by the 7.5 magnitude earthquake that occurred in the Flores Sea.

A 5.5 aftershocks also struck 129 km northwest of Maumere at 10:47 a.m. WIB. BMKG has stated that the aftershock would not trigger a tsunami.
