Several reports have been received of the damages caused by the earthquake in Jember District.
Jakarta (ANTARA) - A 5.0 magnitude earthquake that struck the southern region of East Java Province on Thursday at 06:01:33 Western Indonesia Standard Time (WIB) reportedly damaged several buildings in Jember District.

"Several reports have been received of the damages caused by the earthquake in Jember District," Coordinator for Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation at the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) Daryono stated here on Thursday.

The center of the quake was located at 8.55 degrees South latitude and 113.48 degrees East Longitude.

It was located at sea, some 43 km southwest of Jember District, at a depth of 26 kilometers (km).

The magnitude of the disaster was reported to be 5.1 M. However, it was revised to 5.0 M.

The disaster modeling result showed that the earthquake had no potential to trigger a tsunami.

Taking into account the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, it was an intraplate earthquake.

Meanwhile, analysis of the source mechanism indicated that the disaster was caused by a thrust fault.

Daryono noted that shocks of Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) V were sensed in Puger Sub-district, Jember District. Meanwhile, in other regions of Jember District, the shocks were felt at MMI IV.

Tremors were also felt by residents in the villages of Kuta and Legian in Badung District as well as Denpasar City in Bali Province at III MMI.

In Banyuwangi District, quakes of MMI II-III were felt.

Meanwhile, people in Jimbaran Village, Badung District, Bali Province, as well as Karangkates Village in Malang District, Lumajang District, and Bondowoso District, East Java Province, felt the vibrations at MMI II.

The MMI II shocks are only noticed by few people and can sway hung light objects. The MMI III tremors usually felt by people indoors are akin to a passing truck. Meanwhile, the MMI IV tremors can cause windows, doors, and walls to make cracking sounds.
