Jakarta (ANTARA) - A Transportation Ministry's official confirmed that traffic control policies enacted during the 2021 Christmas and 2022 New Year period will be situational, as the enforcement will depend on the actual traffic situation.

"When we observe a significant increase in vehicular movement, either on toll roads or national roads, we will recommend the local traffic authorities to enforce requisite traffic adjustment. The traffic adjustment itself will depend on the actual traffic situation," the ministry's Director General of Land Transportation, Budi Setiyadi, noted at a press conference on the transportation control plan during the Christmas and New Year period here on Monday.

Setiyadi noted that the authority is likely to enact a traffic control policy targeting private vehicles if the actual traffic situation necessitates the imposition of restriction.

If vehicular traffic significantly increases and is potentially causing logjams, then the transportation authority could recommend to the local authorities to enact traffic control policies, such as conducting contraflow lane reversal, designating temporary one-way roads, or implementing the odd-even plate policy to lower the traffic pressure, the director general remarked.

The ministry also allows regional authorities to implement the traffic adjustment policy based on the local requirement, he noted.

Inputs from relevant stakeholders, such as the police force, the Public Works and Public Housing Ministry, and toll road operators, have been taken into account prior to proceeding with the year-end traffic control policy, the ministry's official noted.

"We have prepared the traffic control plan, yet it is the police that has the final discretion to implement the traffic control policy," Setiyadi stated.

Apart from private vehicles, some traffic restrictions may also apply to logistics and cargo trucks, he remarked.

"If high traffic volume on toll roads leads to traffic logjams, we will instruct large trucks to exit the toll and continue their journey on the national roads," Setiyadi stated.
