"Various efforts have been made, so that the program can continue and be able to respond to the developments, challenges, and environmental problems in connection with environmental awareness education. Formal schools are expected to become the core as well as a place and a magnet in its development," Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya Bakar stated at the 2021 Adiwiyata Award Award here on Friday.

The award is given to schools across Indonesia that have environmental awareness and culture, as demonstrated by the implementation of an environment-friendly outlook by the school community and the success in improving the quality of the environment within the school and its surrounding area.

The ministry has initiated the movement of environmental care culture in schools with the issuance of Minister of Environment and Forestry Regulation Number P.52 of 2019.

Through the movement, Bakar believes that the Adiwiyata award-winning schools are expected to support and contribute to accelerating the establishment of 20 thousand Climate Villages by 2025 and making significant contributions in achieving Indonesia's climate targets.

Since being first conducted in 2006, some 4,726 schools from 34 provinces have won the National Adiwiyata and Adiwiyata Mandiri awards. The figure covers less than two percent of Indonesia's schools reaching over 280 thousand schools.

"However, the results and influence of the movement are much greater in the community," she noted.
