Solo, C Java (ANTARA) - Revitalizing traditional markets is one of President Joko Widodo's priority programs, Public Works and Public Housing Minister Basuki Hadimuljono has said.



The revitalized markets inaugurated by the President include Johar Market in Semarang, Central Java, and Grand Market in Ngawi, East Java, he said during the inauguration of Legi Market here on Thursday.



House Speaker Puan Maharani inaugurated the Legi Market, which is the 15th market to be renovated under the market revitalization program.



"The Grand Market in Klaten is being renovated. In Central Java, there are 14 more markets that have been renovated in accordance with the Presidential regulation, not to mention markets in Batu, Malang, and Maluku," she said.

Meanwhile, Surakarta (Solo) Mayor Gibran Rakabuming Raka expressed gratitude for the revitalization of Legi Market.



"Legi Market has been revitalized several times since it was built during the Mangkunegara 1 regime," he said.



The three-storey market comprises 306 kiosks and 2,190 stalls, he noted. It also provides rooms for hundreds of traders, he added.

"The Surakarta city government is committed to managing and maintaining Legi Market to become a wholesale market that functions not only as a safe and clean trade facility, but also as an engine of economic recovery in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic," he said.



He also expressed the hope that Legi Market will function as an economic center not only for Solo, but also Greater Solo (covering Solo city, Sukoharjo, Klaten, Boyolali, Sragen, Karanganyar, and Wonogiri districts).



"What is more (the market) has applied a non-cash transaction system to make transactions more efficient," he informed.
