Jakarta (ANTARA) - Communication and Informatics Minister Johnny G. Plate has urged gadget manufacturers and application developers in Indonesia to offer more choices of 5G products and networked devices.

With the availability of gadgets and applications in the 5G network, Plate is optimistic of the public switching over to the 5G network to make the most of its benefits.

"I seek support from network operators and the entire ecosystem to optimize the 5G network. This means handheld products (smartphone and tablets) manufacturers and software developers could bring technology that allows the public to get the 5G experience," Plate noted on Tuesday.

Not only in terms of physical technology (hardware), Plate is also optimistic that the operating system (software) in Indonesia would accommodate gadget users in Indonesia to benefit from the existing 5G network in Indonesia.

Based on data collected by the Ministry of Communication and Informatics, there were only 32 handheld technology products in Indonesia, Plate noted.

This figure is also dominated by a few well-known product brands, with a wide market in the country.

Plate is optimistic that in 2022, the number of gadgets, with the ability to connect to 5G internet services in Indonesia, would multiply.

“Mobile operators have begun serving and providing 5G networks. At the same time, gadgets owned by the public must have the ability to connect to 5G networks," he remarked.

The minister later remarked that Indonesia had begun using the 5G network in 2021, with Telkomsel as the first network provider.

Other cellular operator providers, such as Indosat Ooredoo and XL Axiata, had also taken a cue from Telkomsel to start introducing 5G networks in their services.

Currently, the 5G network can be used in Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, Bekasi (Jabodetabek), Bandung, Batam, Balikpapan, Makassar, Surakarta, Surabaya, Denpasar, and Medan.
