"The flood submerged 209 housing units in two villages, namely Lemahabang and Tuk Karangsuwung, Lemahabang sub-district," chief executive of the Regional Disaster Mitigation Office (BPBD), Cirebon, Alex Suheriyawan, informed on Monday.
Residents' houses, especially those located on the banks of the river, were flooded by water reaching a height of between 80 cm and 120 cm, he said.
The flood occurred around 7 p.m. local time on Sunday night (January 30, 2022) and prompted dozens of residents to evacuate to safer places.
"Currently, the flood has receded and residents have returned to their homes to clean up their flood-affected homes," Suheriyawan said.
This time, the floodwaters receded quickly, within a few hours, he added.
He appealed to residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant, especially during intense rains.
"We have taken emergency measures by evacuating people in need," he said.
Indonesia is currently experiencing the peak of the rainy season, which is expected to last until February.
The rainy season has triggered flooding in several provinces such as East Java, Central Java, Aceh, Papua, West Sumatra, South Kalimantan, and East Kalimantan.
