Jakarta (ANTARA) - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has said he is confident that the development of an electric vehicle ecosystem would encourage people to switch from conventional oil-fueled vehicles.

The President briefly observed a demonstration of the battery charging process of an electric motorcycle at the launch event of the electric vehicle ecosystem at the MT Haryono gas station, here on Tuesday.

"I've seen how the vehicle was charged with (the source) that was prepared. It doesn't take long to take a new one and then insert the old one," he remarked. His visit was broadcast live on the official YouTube channel of the Presidential Secretariat.

He said that the demonstration was proof that the process of managing electric vehicles is efficient and convenient, and will suit the needs of vehicle users.

"And it will attract everyone's interest to (switch to) electric vehicles because they are cheaper, and most importantly: (they) do not cause pollution," Widodo said.

The growing interest in electric vehicles will also be in accordance with the government's goal to have two million electric vehicles on Indonesian roads by 2025, he added.

He said the government is planning to produce electric vehicles for the international market as well.

The President also stressed that expanding the electric vehicle ecosystem would support the government's efforts toward achieving the target of 29-percent carbon emission reduction by 2030 and net-zero emissions, or carbon neutrality, by 2060.

The electric vehicle ecosystem launched by President Widodo at the MT Haryono gas station was installed in collaboration with Pertamina, Electrum, Gojek, and the Indonesia Battery Corporation, officials said.
