"This may be the first toll road with bicycle lanes in Indonesia since it is located in the tourism area. We must adapt to the needs of the tourist community," Hadimuljono noted while attending the signing of the Gilimanuk-Mengwi Toll Road Development Agreement in Bali, Tuesday.
The minister later remarked that the Gilimanuk-Mengwi Toll Road, Yogya-Solo Toll Road, and Bawen-Yogya Toll Road were part of the National Strategic Projects (PSN) that should be implemented immediately.
Hadimuljono also advised that construction of the Gilimanuk-Mengwi toll road must always maintain harmony with the environment.
"We will build the best that we can and continue to maintain the environment. At first, we will build a toll road in the middle of Bali, but I think it will cause major damage to the environment, so we take the one alongside the beach road," he stated.
The Gilimanuk-Mengwi Toll Road will be the second toll road segment in Bali after the Bali Mandara Toll Road that aims to develop the tourism sector in Bali, especially to increase connectivity from Gilimanuk Port to the Sarbagita Metropolitan that often experiences congestion.
The Gilimanuk-Mengwi Toll Road is administratively located in several areas, specifically in the districts of Tabanan, Badung, and Jembrana, which is built with an investment of Rp24.6 trillion. The construction will begin in June 2022 and is expected to be completed and become operational by November 2024.
This toll road is planned to be divided into three sections: Section 1, spanning a length of 54 km, connecting Gilimanuk to Pekutatan; Section 2, with a length of 23 km connecting Pekutatan to Soka; and Section 3, measuring a length of 18.9 km, connecting Soka to Mengwi.
The Gilimanuk-Pekutatan toll road section will be equipped with four lanes for two-way vehicles, while the Pekutatan-Mengwi toll road section will be equipped with lanes for motorcycles, bicycle lanes, and pedestrians.
