The General Election Commission Indonesia is working to prepare for the 2024 general election
Makassar, South Sulawesi (ANTARA) - The General Election Commission has said it will not respond to the discourse on the postponement of the 2024 general elections because the House of Representatives and the government have set the poll schedule.

"The election postponement is the domain of the People's Consultative Assembly. The General Elections Commission has decided in the commission's Decree (that it would be held on) February 14, 2024," a member of the General Election Commission, Viryan Azis, said here on Wednesday.

As the organizer of the general election, the commission will continue to discharge its duties and responsibilities for hosting a fair democratic process after the schedule for the 2024 general election is determined, he added.

Upon being asked whether the commission was disturbed by the discourse on election postponement, he said that it was still consistent in carrying out the agreement that had become a joint determination.

"The General Election Commission is still preparing for the 2024 general election. So, the commission has already decided on the election date. So, all the election management members, including my presence here, are to prepare and conduct the 2024 election," he added.

There has been much debate over the postponement of the general election even since the general chairperson of the National Awakening Party, Muhaimin Iskandar, proposed putting elections off for one or two years.

He said he made the suggestion to prevent economic recovery from coming to a halt.

The postponement was seconded by General Chairperson of the Golkar Party Airlangga Hartarto, and general chairperson of the National Mandate Party (PAN) Zulkifli Hasan.
