Medan, North Sumatera (ANTARA) - Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna H. Laoly invited all regional governments, especially governors in Sumatra, to encourage their people to gain greater awareness of intellectual property.

During the Intellectual Property Roving Seminar event titled "Encouraging Creativity and Innovation for National Economic Recovery" here on Wednesday, Laoly noted that awareness of intellectual property and the government's role in this were of utmost importance.

Examples of intellectual property comprise recording copyright, brand rights, and geography indication, he stated.

The intellectual property ecosystem, as the economic cycle driven by innovation and creativity, not only improves their owners' economy but can also bolster growth and development of the national economy, he explained.

Intellectual property can expedite the realization of nation branding, the minister stated.

Nation branding is a strategy to represent a nation, with the target of building a reputation through tourism, socio-economic conditions, and investment.

In fact, intellectual property also supports the nation's economic independence.

Laoly cited as an example the success of Endek fabric from Bali becoming a nation brand.

After the fabric was listed as an intellectual property and became a national brand, it was utilized by the Christian Dior fashion house during the 2021 Paris Fashion Week.

From the 86 latest collection designs from Christian Dior, nine fashion designs used the Endek Bali fabric.

Moreover, Indonesian citizens must implement four main pillars, so that intellectual property can support the nation's economy.

The four main pillars in intellectual property comprise the creation of intellectual property, the acquisition or protection of intellectual property, law enforcement, and commercialization of intellectual property.

During the event, he also lauded 10 governors across Sumatra Island for having boosted the growth of their regions' intellectual property creativity and innovation.

"Indonesia, specifically Sumatra Island, with its cultural and natural resource diversity, has several quality products and potentials that can be encouraged through communal intellectual property to compete in the global market," he remarked.
